Shannon Cowley Signs With Vermont
Shannon Cowley signed a national letter of intent with the University of Vermont this morning and will be a member of their swimming and dive team next year.
“I really enjoyed my visit to Vermont,” said Cowley. ”The atmosphere there was like a family and the coaching staff was really nice. They have everything I want athletically and academically and I know it is a good fit for me.”
“The coaches said they love swimmers from the Midwest and told me they expect me to be an impact player as a freshman,” continued Cowley. ”I am excited about being part of the building process at Vermont and excited to be a Division I student athlete”
Cowley chose Vermont over Purdue, Idaho, Minnesota and Louisville and took official visits to all of those schools..
Cowley has been a standout performer for the Eagles for the last 4 years earning All-SEC honors each year. She has been named to the All-State team in her each of her first 3 seasons and has qualified for the State meet each year. She was named All-American in 2012 and is the current SEC record holder in the 100 yd breaststroke and the 200 medley relay.
“Shannon is really a solid fit for the Vermont program.” said head coach Maureen Isaac. ”She excels when she knows she can make a difference and is a great team player. She will do well at the next level!”
Skyline High School won not one, but two team State Championships on Saturday as the men’s soccer team won the MHSAA Division I championship by defeating Bloomfield Hills and the women’s field hockey team won the MHSFHA Division II championship by defeating Grand Rapids Forrest Hills a few hours later.
The soccer team dominated play throughout the game, controlling possession for much of the first 60 minutes of the game. They put several shots on goal but could not get one past the Bloomfield Hills goal keeper.
Midway through the second half, Alec Lasinski broke loose and put a shot on net that hit a defender in the hand and the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick. Lawrence Mullen made sure he took advantage of that opportunity and rifled a ball into the net deflecting it off the goalie.
The Eagles defense held strong for the remainder of the game and Skyline had its first State Championship!
Shortly after the championship trophy was presented to the soccer team, the field hockey team began their game with Forrest Hills. The Eagles got on the board early and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Both teams had several opportunities in the second half but Forrest Hills was the only team to capitalize, scoring a goal in the last 10 minutes of the game.
An overtime period followed and though Skyline had several good scoring chances, they could not get a shot past the Forrest Hills keeper.
Sylvie Isaac scored a goal to get the Eagles on the board in the first round of penalty strokes but once again, it was all tied up after each team had taken their required five shots.
Sudden death penalty strokes would follow and Skyline’s Josie Hamilton scored in the first sudden-death stroke. It was up to goalie Margo Fraleigh to keep Forrest Hills off the board and she saved the shot, giving Skyline field hockey’s first championship.
